An idyllic Hamptons haven, lovingly brought back to life. Built in 1950 on a street with 30 identical cottages, this cozy 550-square-foot beach house was completely reborn in 2019. Rather than tear down a piece of history and start from scratch, the owners were determined to preserve the home’s original spirit. After seeking six variances from the town of Amagansett, one of which successfully upgraded the structure from “shed” status to a habitable home, the Gramercy Design team was, at last, able to make the owners’ dream a reality.
With the installation of new cedar shingle siding, a cedar shake roof and Marvin painted windows, the stage was set for what quickly became the home’s signature feature: custom board and batten shutters in a beautiful sky blue color.
“The shutters, specifically the color, was a major design push out of the client’s comfort zone,” Gramercy Design’s Kyle O’Donnell said. “But in the end, they were everyone’s favorite element of the house. The shutters made a big impact and are well admired by everyone on the block.”
